Why a Dry January needn't be a Boring January

January 08, 2014

Doing a dry January? Doesn't mean there has to be no fun this month!

It seems to me that after a typical heavy Christmas period culminating in the biggest night of the year (which, contrary to other countries, is NOT over-rated in Hong Kong), the temptation might be to enter a period of hibernation, or 'dry' in today's slang. With Chinese New Year coming up, this little 4 week period seems the perfect time to rest, recover and perhaps shed some holiday weight!

I must admit, I have tried this dry month in the past, but found completely shutting away (for meeting non dry-ers, could mean temptations to relent) boring, un-fun and somewhat un-doable. So this month I have decided to do more fun things to help the time go faster...

Instead of the usual happy hour venues in LKF on a friday night with a pizza slice in between, I am going to choose a venue for the food. There are some great new food venues opening up all the time, hidden secrets that require an evening to be made of it. Try something new, something different. Masu Robatayaki and Sushi springs to my mind.

Now for the really fun venues.... Bowling. Everyone forgets how fun bowling is, particularly when there is a group of you. Hong Kong has some great bowling venues, all pretty reasonable. So organising a bowling event with my friends is definitely on my to do list! Maybe an ice skating venue too could be on the cards, but that sounds quite tiring!

There's also Sideways - which for those of you don't know, is Hong Kong's funnest, coolest and most realistic driving experience. Race in Forumla 1 simulators against your mates, in the heart of Central. Drop them a line through VenueHub and they will be happy to accommodate you. I can think of nothing better than spending a Saturday night here with your mates, racing away and getting an early night after!

Bottom line is January can still be fun, even if you're going dry. Continue to plan and organise parties and events, but make them different. I started dry January and then was invited on a Jaspas Junk on 5th of Jan. Booze and food on the water.... I couldn't say no... but everyone is allowed one exception right!?
